Irving Berlin

I lost the sunshine and roses, I lost the heavens of blue,
I lost the beautiful rainbow, I lost the morning dew.
I lost the angel who gave me summer, the whole winter too.
I lost the gladness that turned into sadness,
When I lost you.

And I lost the angel who gave me summer, the whole winter too.
I lost the gladness that turned into sadness,
When I lost you

Irving Berlin, Jewish America composer and lyricist of some of my favourite musicals, White Christmas and Easter Parade wrote this song for his beloved wife, Dorothy who died a short 6 months into their marriage.  Irving's deeply romantic soul arouses the romance from life and from those of us who take the time to listen.  He coaxes us to the edge and encourages us to plunge face first into naive belief that there is always heart bursting happiness and pure love around every corner.  Even in his sadness, there is beauty.  I'd like to think that I have a lot of Mr. Irving in my eyes.
