SUGAR! (Refined sugar, that is) What a tricky little thing.
Looks enticing, tastes yummy, is an ingredient in most things we eat,
even makes photos look cuter with it in it...But do we really know the devious trickeries and havoc it's reeking on our bodies?
This morning I read a fascinating NPR article, Should Sugar Be Regulated Like Alcohol?. Here are a few facts I found very interesting.
- The average America drinks 57 gallons of soda a year and consumes 450 calories of sugar (not fruit-sugar) daily.
- Alcohol isn't the only substance to harm your liver. Sugar, especially fructose is toxic to the liver.
- All food is good. There is no bad food. God wouldn't do that to us. It's what we do with the food that is the problem. Refining everything gets us into trouble!
- Double check what you are buying and eating!! SO many things we blindly grab off the shelf and add to our grocery basket is chocked full of fructose, unnecessary sugar! That sugar was added specifically for the food industry's purpose-- for a longer shelf life and palpability, but it is TOXIC to our livers and figures!
- Sugar affects our brains the same way cocaine, alcohol, tobacco, heroin etc affects it. That's why we constantly feel a need for another 'hit' of it.
Here's the link to the article if you'd like to read it, gasp over the horrors of excess sugar and then pledge to be strong and say no to all 'devil's food' (aka anything that contains unnatural sugars) as I have done.
